BREASTFEEDING
Potential Food Irritants
| You may want to avoid eating the following (as they go through to baby via breastmilk): |

Dairy (60% of those allergic to dairy are also allergic to soy), wheat |
|
Alcohol, caffeine, preservatives (very irritating) |
|
Spicy food, chillies |
|
Acidic fruits and vegetables (tomatoes, oranges, grapefruit, lemons, etc.) |
|
Garlic (powdered causes less gas then fresh) |
|
Cruciferous vegetables; broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, onions, etc. cause a lot of gas |
Test foods using elimination trials; it takes 10 days to completely clear a food from breastmilk, thus, 3 weeks is a good trial duration.
Probiotics
 Breastfeeding moms should take Natren brand Healthy Trinity (acidophilus, bifidum & bulgaricus bacteria) once per day. See bottle for dosage guidelines.
If baby is colicky, or has stool irregularities, or has a bacterial infection (vomiting or diarrhea), then supplement baby with Natren's Life Start probiotic (B. infantis bacteria). Give 1/8 teaspoon twice per day for colic or bowel movement problems and six times per day during vomiting or diarrhea. You can let baby suck the probiotic powder off your finger, or, mix it with some breastmilk, water or formula (if formula feeding) and give to baby via a dropper or a bottle. Do not give a breastfeeding/bottle feeding baby adult strains of probiotics.
Once baby is eating solid foods, you can supplement with Natren's Healthy Trinity adult strain probiotics (acidophilus, bifidum & bulgaricus bacteria), 1/4 tsp. (powder form) once per day, on an empty stomach, mixed in water, breast milk, formula, or non-acidic juice like apple or pear.
