Listen To Your Gut
c.2001 Jini Patel Thompson |
| Here is a book that is a must for any IBD patient, particularly those that have
already tried the host of medical treatments that are available with little success. |
| Jini Patel Thompson was diagnosed with widespread Crohn's Disease in 1986. For
the next three years she adhered to medical treatment protocols until it became
clear they were not helping her. She spent the next seven years researching and
experimenting with alternative healing methods and therapies as she lived and
worked in Canada, Japan and England. Jini has since remained drug and
surgery-free for over a decade. She continues to manage her symptoms and heal
flare-ups using the natural methods described in Listen to Your Gut. Jini runs her
own business and travels every month or two throughout North America, Asia and
Europe. She is married and currently lives with her husband in Vancouver, Canada. |
| With wit and compassion she teaches readers how to control their bowels,
transform pain, heal their rectal fissures and relieve gas and bloating. All levels of
symptoms are addressed, from mild gas and diarrhea to intestinal hemorrhaging
and severe malnutrition. She explains how the healing process works and guides
the reader through he various stages of the journey to health and wholeness. |
| This really is a book from which any IBD sufferer can learn and so improve their
quality of life. The first chapter says it all: Take your life back! The book is
dedicated to fellow travelers along this pathway to wellness. May you have peace
and fulfillment and live a life of unbridled joy and vibrancy! |

| AUSTRALIAN CROHN'S & COLITIS ASSOC. (QUEENSLAND) NEWSLETTER -
Summer 2001 |
| "This book is the result of the author's search for ten years to find an answer to her
Crohn's disease. Experimenting with a number of different herbal and alternative
remedies, she has outlined what she has found to work best. As the author states,
"My healing process is based upon a mind/body/spirit paradigm: In order to heal,
we heal all aspects of the self, not just the physical body" (pg.19). This book
concentrates on the physical aspects of healing but also includes a chapter on
techniques such as affirmations and visualization. A part of the physical healing, is
what the author calls Bodywork therapies, which are designed to assist the body in
healing. These include Acupuncture (Japanese rather than Chinese), massage
therapy (therapeutic rather than relaxing), craniosacral therapy, Bio-Kinesiology,
Naturopathic medicine, meditation, colonic massage and exercise. |
| A recommended reading list is also included which lists books on emotional,
spiritual and mental healing. The author states that using the methods outlined in
the book, she has been drug and surgery free for over a decade. Ulcerative colitis,
diverticulosis and IBS are also covered. |
| Herbal Therapies and Supplements are listed under a particular symptom with
some remedies repeated as they may be useful for more than one symptom. There
are suggestions for vitamin and mineral supplements that will assist healing. A
number of "Healing Diets" are given which are used according to the severity of
symptoms. An outline is given for how to screen for food intolerance. |
| There is a chapter on lifestyle and environmental factors in which the author
encourages the reader to look at your life and how you live it to determine if any of
these factors are contributing to the disease. The author discusses "western" or
orthodox medicine but sees this as another option not the only option. Her
message throughout the book is to be in control of your own healing. "Let your
intuition guide you". The last chapter consists of summaries of treatment plans for
particular conditions. These are designed as a starting point for action. At the end
of each chapter is a list of questions or activities to help the reader further explore
the information given. Practitioner Resource and Product Supplier lists are also
given but consist of Canadian and American contacts. |
| I found this book very interesting to read as it is a very comprehensive guide to
natural remedies and alternative therapies. The emphasis throughout the book is to
concentrate on healing and to be aware of what your body is telling you. There is a
lot of information and not all of the techniques would suit everyone. However it
would be a good starting point for someone wanting to explore this area." |

| "They diagnosed me and gave me a name. Since then I've been seeking an answer
and some relief. The search has been complicated by medical-diagnostic
confusions and a vast amount of semi-informed health information.[1] There are
thousands of names out there and everyone has an answer. Sound familiar |
| "Listen to Your Gut" is a start in taking your life back. Jini Thompson shows how to
begin cutting through this jungle. She offers some sound general advice on coping
with several functional somatic syndromes without insisting too much on one
particular method. Her overall approach is a reasonable one that all sufferers can
embark on without having to resolve the medical/non-medical puzzle [2]. "Listen To
Your Gut" is advice someone from a doctor to a poet might pass out.[3] |
| Her holistic approach includes attention to diet, lifestyle changes, and various
psychological approaches to stress management. It is useful for less serious
appearances of these syndromes as well as the more disabling versions. In
addition to providing healing diets, she provides background explanations and basic
information on herbal remedies, allopathic medicine, and bodywork therapies. She
then provides hints for people to use in further exploration of these areas of
treatment, putting the burden of improvement where it belongs: On the person. |
| Along with other sufferers, I need to keep in mind the idea that we are dealing with
syndromes or clusters of symptoms at this point. In some cases the underlying
disease pathology is known and in some it is not yet clear. As these pathologies
become clearer the approaches outlined here will undoubtedly continue to be useful
in dealing with the symptoms described and Ms. Thompson does a very good job
of matching specific treatments to specific symptoms." |
